Academy Award nominee Paul Giamatti is set to be honored with the prestigious Icon Award for his remarkable performance in the film “The Holdovers” at the upcoming Palm Springs International Film Awards. The ceremony is scheduled to take place on January 4 at the Palm Springs Convention Center, with the festival running from January 4 to January 15. Directed by the acclaimed Alexander Payne, “The Holdovers” unfolds the story of Paul (played by Giamatti), a gruff instructor at a New England prep school. Circumstances force him to stay on campus during the holiday break, overseeing a handful of students with nowhere else to go.

As the narrative unfolds, a compelling and unlikely bond emerges between Paul and a troubled, intellectually gifted troublemaker portrayed by newcomer Dominic Sessa. The film also explores the connection between Paul and the school’s head cook, who is grappling with the recent loss of her son in the Vietnam War, played by Da’Vine Joy Randolph. Giamatti’s performance in “The Holdovers” has garnered significant attention during the awards season, earning three Golden Globe nominations and eight Critics Choice nominations, including a nod for the Best Actor category. This marks Giamatti’s second collaboration with director Alexander Payne, the first being their acclaimed 2004 film “Sideways.”

“In ‘The Holdovers,’ Paul Giamatti inhabits a complex character who is both challenging and rewarding, and ultimately reminds us of what it means to be connected as human beings,” expressed festival chairman Nachhattar Singh Chandi in a statement. “For his storied career of quintessential cinematic roles, it is our honor to present the Icon Award to Paul Giamatti for this career-best performance.” Paul Giamatti, known for his versatility, has showcased his acting prowess across various film and television projects. Presently, he stars in the second season of the Spanish-horror series, “30 Coins,” and is also part of the final season of “Billions.”

Giamatti’s exceptional portrayal in “Billions” has earned him nominations for a Broadcast Film Critics Association Award and a Critics Choice Award in the Best Actor in a Drama Series category. His extensive television credits include notable appearances in “Lodge 49,” “Inside Amy Schumer,” “Downton Abbey,” and “Too Big to Fail,” which earned him a SAG Award and nominations for both Emmy and Golden Globes. In 2008, Giamatti clinched Emmy, SAG, and Golden Globe awards for his outstanding performance in the miniseries “John Adams.”

As Paul Giamatti is celebrated with the Icon Award, the Palm Springs International Film Awards recognize not only his exceptional contribution to “The Holdovers” but also his illustrious career, marked by compelling and unforgettable cinematic roles. The acknowledgment adds another distinguished accolade to Giamatti’s rich and storied legacy in the world of film and television.
